Uzbekistan Airways (Uzbek Havo Yullari) was created by presidential decree following Uzbekistan's Declaration of Independence in 1991. It is one of the successor airlines to Aeroflot. However, the airline has distinguished itself as one of the better managed post- Soviet airlines with a mission to modernize and compete internationally. Uzbekistan Airways serves approximately 2 million passengers annually and holds a monopoly on domestic airline service which it seeks to improve through the purchase of several new European commuter aircraft. The airline is reinvesting its profits in airports and buying other new aircraft. Uzbek Airways has two leased Airbus A310 aircraft and recently purchased two Boeing 767 aircraft. One Boeing 767 has already been delivered and is used along with the Airbuses on many international routes.

Uzbekistan Airways is the only airline to fly directly to and from Uzbekistan with one brief stop in Amsterdam to refuel. Currently there is only one flight a week between the United States and Uzbekistan departing Tashkent and New York's JFK Airport on Fridays. There are more frequent connections to Tashkent through London, Frankfurt and Istanbul. Other international destinations include Athens, Delhi, Seoul, Sharjah, Beijing, Bahrain, Jakarta, Tel Aviv, Kuai,a Lumpur, Moscow, Bangkoy, Karachi, Mamchester, and St. Petersburg.
