The National Bank for Foreign Economic Activity was established by the decree of the President of Uzbekistan in 1991 to monitor use of currency resources, promote exports and stimulate development of foreign economic activity. The bank's capital resources are 2 billion sums and 234 million dollars. The bank has 17 branches in key areas of Uzbekistan.

The National Bank holds accounts for the Cabinet of Ministers and provides intergovernmental loans, as well as carries out almost 95 percent of all payments between Uzbek and foreign organizations. The bank is a member of the "swift" system, a nd has established almost 120 Correspondent accounts with such banks as Chase Manhattan Bank, Bank of New York, Bank of America, Citibank, Union Bank of Switzerland, Credit Suisse, Credit Lyonnais, Credit Commercial De France, Dresdner Bank, and Bank of Tokyo.
